It has been estimated that Japan has the potential for 144 GW for onshore wind and 608 GW of offshore wind capacity.
The Environment Ministry estimates that Japan has the potential to build enough wind power facilities to produce 280 GW, but that potential has not even begun to be tapped. Japan aims to expand its offshore wind power installed capacity to 10 GW by 2030 and 30 to 45 GW by 2040.
A clear roadmap and process for development are in place to increase the installed capacity over the coming decades. There are around 5.4 GW of projects in the planning system.
Developments are in the pipeline as interested parties get ready with bids. Domestic Japanese and foreign are partnering to form stronger competence outfits for this accelerated demand for renewable energy.
In December 2021 the Government of Japan selected three consortiums, all led by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Solutions, as the operators for three offshore wind power projects in Akita, northern Japan, and Chiba, near Tokyo. These are the wind farm near Choshi in Chiba (391 MW), the wind project (479 MW) off the coast of Noshiro, Mitane and Oga in Akita and the project off the coast of Yurihonjo in Akita (819 MW). Yurihonjo will be the largest wind farm in Japan. Execution of this portfolio of projects will take place over several years and is expected to start in the second half of this decade.
It can be assumed that, for the foreseeable future, Japan will need to import turbines to develop the Offshore Wind industry.
